Jason Momoa is an actor, model, director, writer, and producer. On television, he is best known for his roles as Ronon Dex on the military science fiction series "Stargate Atlantis", and as Khal Drogo in the Emmy-nominated HBO fantasy series "Game of Thrones". On the big screen, he has starred in the reboot of "Conan the Barbarian", and has appeared as Aquaman in the DC film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", as well as the upcoming "Justice League". He's currently filming the standalone "Aquaman" movie in Australia.
An only child, Jason was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was raised in Norwalk, Iowa, by his mother. After high school, Jason began college in Iowa as a marine biology major, studying for a period in the Florida Keys. He transferred his major to wildlife biology at Colorado State University. Before completing his degree, he moved back to the Hawaiian Islands. As a young man, he travelled extensively, took up pastel painting in Paris, and studied Buddhist teachings in Tibet.
In 1998, Jason was discovered by international designer Takeo Kobayashi, who encouraged his modelling career. He won Hawaii's Model of the Year 1999 and hosted the Miss Teen Hawaii contest. He was working part-time in a surf shop at the age of 19 when he was cast in "Baywatch Hawaii". In addition to his appearances in "North Shore", "Johnson Family Vacation", and "Stargate Atlantis", Jason was cast as Roman in four episodes of the comedy-drama television series "The Game". He portrayed the title protagonist in "Conan the Barbarian", a reimagining of the 1982 film of the same name and a role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jason earned his role of Khal Drogo on HBO's "Game Of Thrones" through his audition, in which he performed the Haka, an intimidating Māori war dance traditionally used on the battlefield.
Jason directed and co-wrote "Road to Paloma", an American drama thriller film, together with writers Jonathan Hirschbein and Robert Homer Mollohan. In 2014, he joined the dark comedy/thriller indie "Sugar Mountain" alongside Cary Elwes. He also starred as Phillip Kopus, a Ramapough Mountain Indian, on the SundanceTV drama series "The Red Road".
In June 2014, Jason was reported to have been cast as Aquaman in the superhero film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice". This was later confirmed in October 2014, marking Aquaman's live-action theatrical debut, with future appearances in Justice League (scheduled for a 2017 release) and "Aquaman" (scheduled for a 2018 release).
Other recent roles include Connor in the horror film "Wolves" and Miami Man, a cannibal in the thriller "The Bad Batch". Upcoming roles include Joe Braven in the action movie "Braven" and Spider opposite Bruce Willis in "Once Upon a Time in Venice". He is rumoured to have been cast as Eric Draven/the Crow in a remake of "The Crow", and is confirmed as Rico Rodriguez in the film of the hit video game series "Just Cause". Jason is currently starring in the Netflix original series, "Frontier", portraying Declan Harp, a half-Cree, half-Irish trapper waging his own war with the British during the days of the fur trade in Early Canada.
